A technology readiness levels (TRLs) calculator software for systems engineering and technology management tool
نویسندگان
چکیده
Turkish defense industry and policy makers seek effective and successful system development programs by implementing a validation mechanism to verify the maturity of new technologies being developed in national laboratories and industry. Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) developed by NASA as a general metric of technology advancement and it has been widely accepted as a systems engineering and technology management metric tool. In order to explore the sufficiency of this tool, first of all, academic and applicable studies of army and civil organizations have been searched out and the lessons learned have been analyzed in this study. Thereafter, questionnaires of awareness of TRLs and TRL Calculator have been applied to defense firms in Ankara, and interviews held with the technology developers, firms’ speakers and defense authorities. Finally, the applicable algorithm of TRL calculator has been recommended for Turkish defense industry. 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Incorporating Maturity Assessment into Quality Functional Deployment for Improved Decision Support Analysis , Risk Management , and Defense Acquisition
Technology maturity assessment metrics have played a key role in complex system acquisition and technology integration in both the defense and commercial sector. Of these, the U.S. Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) Technology Readiness Level (TRL) has been the de facto standard since it’s inception in the late 1990s. DoD adopted the use of TRLs to provide program managers with critical informatio...

The use of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) as a tool in assessing acquisition and development program risk has steadily increased over the past several years. There is considerable evidence to support the utility of using TRLs as part of a risk assessment, but there are some difficulties in using TRLs with software, especially Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software technology and products....

TRLs have the benefit of providing a common understanding of the status of a technology in its development pathway, a means of assessing and managing risk, and decision making concerning funding and implementation of technology. As with any management tool, there are certain limitations and disadvantages to its use. These include the creation of extra reporting, paperwork, reviews, lengthy adop...
متن کاملA probabilistic approach to system maturity assessment
Prescriptive metrics have been widely accepted and used in engineering management to assess the progress and success of engineering efforts. However, these types of metrics have two major challenges: human subjectivity and confidence in data estimates. In this paper we use a system-focused prescriptive metric entitled System Readiness Level (SRL) [a function of Technology and Integration Readin...
متن کاملReducing Reliability Uncertainties for Marine Renewable Energy
Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) are a widely used metric of technology maturity and risk for marine renewable energy (MRE) devices. To-date, a large number of device concepts have been proposed which have reached the early validation stages of development (TRLs 1–3). Only a handful of mature designs have attained pre-commercial development status following prototype sea trials (TRLs 7–8). In...
